5 Eco-Friendly Household Tips

1. Make your own all-purpose cleaner: Fill a bucket with 2 tbsp. of vinegar, 1 tsp. of borax, 2 cups hot water and ¼ cup of liquid soup. Mix them and pour into a spray bottle, this cleaner is good on all surfaces including kitchen appliances, dining room tables and the bathroom.
2. Reduce water use: Take a shower instead of a bath; most tubs require 70 gallons of water to fill, while taking a 5 minute shower only takes 10 gallons of water. Turn off the water while washing your face or brushing your teeth, a standard faucet dispenses two gallons of water every 60 seconds.
3. Freshen the air naturally: Don’t depend on chemical-based air fresheners to freshen your home, open your doors and windows to circulate fresh air and help get rid of indoor air pollutants such as smoke, fumes and dust.
4. Switch out your light bulbs: Get rid of traditional bulbs and change them out for compact fluorescent bulbs known as CFLs, this will reduce the average home lighting cost by 75%.
5. Deter flies naturally: Flies are common household pests. Buy 3-4 cloves from the grocery store along with some twine or rope. Push the cloves into an unpeeled orange and hang the fruit in an area where you have a fly problem. The citrus and the clove scent will drive the flies away.
