A resident of Apopka, a town in Orange County, Florida, recently had trouble when a Kidde-brand fire extinguisher failed during a fire:
The Apopka Fire Department in Florida sent out an alert on Tuesday about faulty fire extinguishers after a resident struggled to put out a fire with a recalled extinguisher last week. Fire officials said the resident was trying to put out a fire at his home on Vine Court with the fire extinguisher, which was one of the 4.6 million recalled earlier this month for safety concerns. The home suffered $4,500 in damage, but no injuries were reported.
Kidde has announced a massive recall, which will affect almost 5 million families.
A lot of families have fire extinguishers in their homes in case of a small fire. Kidde makes one of the more popular brands and is recalling 4.6 million of their plastic valve disposable fire extinguishers. This recall involves 31 models of Kidde disposable fire extinguishers with Zytel® black plastic valves. The recalled extinguishers are red, white or silver and are either ABC or BC rated. The ratings can be found to the right of the nameplate.
The model of Kidde fire extinguisher is an affordable “single-use” type that isn’t able to be refilled:
Nearly 5 million Kidde fire extinguishers sold over the past two years are being recalled because a defective valve could cause them to fail when used to put out a fire, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday. The massive recall involves 31 different models of disposable fire extinguishers — the type that aren’t made to be refilled. Most were sold between August 2013 and November 2014 for $18 to $65 at stores including Home Depot (HD) and Walmart (WMT), but one model, the XL 5MR, sold for $200, the CPSC said.
The problem is a component in the Zytel plastic valves that can fail when the user repeatedly presses and releases the lever – which is likely to happen during a fire. If you have one of the defective fire extinguishers, contact Kidde to get a free replacement.
