Zero Waste

How to Produce Zero Waste
Are you a restaurant owner looking for ways to reduce the amount of waste your operation produces on a daily basis? Well, you’re in luck! Fortunately, there are ways to achieve that. There are even ways to achieve ZERO WASTE! Zero waste may seem like a lofty goal but by making a few modest changes throughout the operation of your restaurant, it is quite attainable! Here are three helpful tips that will get your establishment headed in the right direction:
1. Remove Non-Recyclable and Non-Compostable Waste:Make an effort to get rid of all waste that is unable to be composted or recycled within your restaurant. That means switching to biodegradable cups, plates, utensils and containers that can all be easily composted. You may also want to ask your vendors to switch avoid using plastics that are unable to be recycling such as polystyrene, which is the most common.
2. Eliminate Trash Bins:Eliminating or at least reducing the size of your trash bins is a great way to force employees and customers to think before throwing away their “trash.” By utilizing more compostable and recyclable items, it reduces the amount of trash generated within your establishment.
3. Educate Your Employees:A great way to maintain a sustainable working environment is to educate your employees on how to make environmentally friendly choices within their daily responsibilities. Effective zero waste is much more attainable when your employees are well aware of proper recycling techniques, composting practices and reusable goods. In addition, it gives your employees the chance to share that knowledge with customers who can also practice sustainability while dining at your restaurant.
Achieving zero waste is no easy feat but by incorporating these three fairly simple guidelines into your restaurant’s operation, you will be well on your way to improving the environment and setting a high standard for sustainable excellence within your business.
